A proxy cache server speeds up access to content by storing frequently accessed internet content. Then if several people in school wish to view the same web page or video these will be delivered to their computer from the local copy.
Initially the servers that were being installed in schools provided faster access to web pages, animations and video and audio files in Windows Media format. However, recent investment in this technology has allowed us to introduce additional functionality and now includes faster access to Real Audio and Real Video files.
We are in the process of upgrading all schools' edge proxy cache servers. They will provide speedier and more stable access to the resources that schools want and enable you to take fuller advantage of forthcoming services provided by the BGfL. Technical information on how to reconfigure the computers in school to make use of the media streaming proxy server are now available on this site: |
