| E-mail services are available on the Birmingham Grid for Learning. At the moment, we can provide e-mail addresses for all members of staff in Birmingham schools and we can provide e-mail for all pupils as well. In providing this service we are trying to ensure that we follow the guidelines on the use of e-mail provided by the E-mail in Schools Task Force.
If your school requires e-mail addresses for staff, please send a list of names of those people who require addresses to

. We must have this information in electronic form, and it is essential that names are correctly spelt. A list from the SIMS or CMIS management information system saved as a text file would be suitable. The information should be sent from one of the official school e-mail addresses:
E-mail addresses will be created using the following syntax:
E-mail may be accessed through a web browser using any Internet connected computer, or using an e-mail program such as Outlook Express or Eudora. For shared machines (such as the two computers provided to many schools by the BGfL project) use of a web browser to access e-mail is recommended. This is accessible at http://webmail.bgfl.org.
If you would like to continue to use the e-mail service which you have in your school office, please let us know when you send us the list of e-mail addresses. We will be able to forward messages to these addresses from the BGfL mail server, but only if you specifically request it. If possible you should plan to connect your school management network to the Grid as soon as possible, so that all e-mail can be delivered across the Grid. This would be a more cost-effective way to send and receive e-mail than to use a dialup modem connection.
It is also possible to access financial reconciliation files across the Grid using the new file transfer system, so you will not need a modem for that either, provided that your administration network is connected to the Grid.
An alternative to using the BGfL mail server or BGfLplus is to have your own mail server in school. This is a program which could run on your existing file server, and to which all e-mail for your school can be sent. This works best in schools with leased line connections.
