Everyone has a part to play in relation to E-safety and this is discussed in more detail on the Becta website as well as the E-safety course. It must be remembered that E-Safety is a child safety issue, not an ICT one and should be managed at a Senior Leadership level in line with the school safeguarding agenda. Becta state that a senior management team member with responsibility for safeguarding should also be the central contact point for all e-safety issues (Becta link ).

In general:

Pupils should

  • feel safe when using the Internet and other related technologies.
  • understand not only how, and to whom, inappropriate material or activity should be reported but also be comfortable enough to make the report.
  • understand what is considered appropriate (and inappropriate) use wherever they are
  • use the Internet responsibly in line with school policies.
  • take responsibility for their actions when they have deliberately accessed inappropriate information.

School staff should

  • use the Internet responsibly in line with school policies.
  • understand the issues associated with educational use of the Internet, including setting appropriate homework
  • understand how to deal with inappropriate use, including accidental and deliberate access to inappropriate information, in line with the school policies
  • plan, teach and evaluate age appropriate E-Safety activities for their pupils

Senior Leadership Teams should

  • establish, monitor and update the school policies, processes and information relating to E-Safety
  • monitor Internet usage within the school to identify risk or issues
  • monitor and evalutate the impact of E-Safety teaching across the school
  • provide continuing professional development opportunities relating to E-Safety for all staff in the school
  • liaise with the relevant external contacts and agencies to ensure they are up to date

In addition, the SLT E-Safety co-ordinator should:

  • monitor minor incidents to identify trends in pupils’ behaviour, and should react proactively to any emerging issues.
