The School became a Specialist Language College in September 2005. A key part of our work is to prepare our students to live and work in an increasingly global world. As the Internet makes communication with even the most far-flung places a daily reality, good language skills are a real asset for any young person.Equally the ability to relate to, and deal with, people from other cultures is an important skill we are seeking to develop.
The Languages Curriculum
The aim of our languages curriculum is to offer our students as much opportunity in language learning as possible. In Year 7 we run a special language enrichment course as well as French lessons. This allows our students to study general language acquisition, Swedish, Danish and Gaelic. In Year 8 and 9 the majority of students also study a second modern foreign language, either German or Spanish, as well as French. At Key Stage 4 all students follow a course in the language of their choice. Both GCSE and more vocationally orientated courses are available.
French, German and Spanish are available to study at A-Level and currently run in consortium
with local schools. The work in the classroom is supplemented by extra-curricular activities.
At Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 there are modern language clubs and students are also given the opportunity to begin a completely new language such as Italian.
