Sports

With excellent new facilities, some of the best in Birmingham, there are many clubs that run during the school year. The school has an excellent record in boy’s football, winning many district cup and leagues at all age groups, as well as performing admirably in national competitions.

Girl’s football has also been very successful with both 11-a-side and 5-a-side teams. The school also has teams represented at athletics events, sailing competitions, orienteering championshipsand netball. As well as the above, the department offers clubs for badminton, basketball, tennis, rounders, rugby, cricket, trampolining and fitness. Fitness is offered in our new well equiped fitness suite, including treadmills, rowing machines, a multi-gym and exercise bikes.

Pupils also have the opportunity to enter a range of inter-form tournaments run
throughout the year, which helps to add competition for those who may not
represent the school teams.

Outdoor Activities

All pupils are encouraged to take part in outdoor activities during their time in school.
The P.E. Department introduce the skills for orienteering as part of their curriculum and often make courses available for pupils in Key Stage 3 for climbing, sailing and canoeing. Pupils take part in a variety of local competitions including sailing regattas, orienteering competitions and a mini triathlon involving swimming, kayaking and running. Year 7 pupils are given the opportunity to attend a PGL adventure week and older pupils often attend Ogwen Cottage Outdoor Pursuit Centre in North Wales. A number of students in the sixth form undertake to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award using camping and walking for their expeditions.

Drama

Drama is a thriving subject in the school and has recently moved into new facilities. The room is equipped with lighting, sound and computer facilities of the highest standard. Drama is taught at Key Stage’s 3 – 5 with excellent results. The success of the Department has led to an increased interest in the subject and the addition of extra curricular activities. Pupils are able to take part in a wide variety of activities with something to suit everyone. Pupils in Key Stage 3 can take part in a variety of workshops throughout the year. Projects include a joint performance piece with Art and Music.

Key Stage 4 pupils can be involved with workshops and theatre visits to various destinations. Key Stage 5 students have theatre visits to London and Stratford and can also support younger pupils in their workshops. For all pupils, Drama offers the opportunity to be involved in the annual school production, creative arts week and to contribute to the religious life of the school with performances in Mass and Assemblies.

Music

All pupils have an hour of music a week in Years 7, 8 and 9. As well as singing, pupils enjoy using a range of instruments including percussion, keyboards, guitars and the drum kit.

The Music Department is now housed in two new classrooms and in addition there are practice rooms Music lessonand a recording studio. Pupils enjoy lots of musical activities outside of lesson time. The Gospel Choir undertakes regular performances including radio and television broadcasts. The Choir has performed in many prestigious venues such as Symphony Hall and the Repratory Theatre. Pupils perform many shows and concerts in school with extremely successful productions including “The Sound of Music”,“Bugsy Malone” and “Grease”. Many pupils learn an instrument at school and enjoy performing on their own and in groups. Pupils have lessons in flute, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, violin and brass instruments. Many other musical activities take place and there is a particularly strong tradition of rock groups in the school. We believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to express themselves musically and at St. Edmund Campion the music never stops!
