The English Faculty is one of the largest departments in the School. It delivers English to every student in Years 7,8 and 9 as well as GCSE English, English Literature and Media Studies in years 10 and 11. The pupils focus on Reading Skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Drama is taught across the school to Key stages 3 and 4. Many pupils go on to take Literature, Media or Drama at AS or A2 during their time in the Sixth Form.
Most of our rooms have been refurbished with Internet access and projectors. The English Computer suite is currently being upgraded. We are always looking to make full use of a wide range of media DVD players in order to make lessons as varied and interesting as possible.
We have a purpose built Drama studio including sound and lighting desk…
We work with PGCE Students from Newman College, which enables the students to gain a greater understanding of working in specific schools, and also keeps the faculty fresh with ideas.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
When pupils first arrive at Campion they study an introductory unit focusing on the Detective genre and move on to non-fiction writing styles and Shakespeare. They also cover various novels, poetry and modern drama. This is in line with the requirements laid out in the National Curriculum. They develop skills that will help them succeed in the SATs exams that they sit in Year 9. This has led to increasingly pleasing results that are in line with the national average.
Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11)
GCSE Coursework
During this time students have the opportunity to study for two qualifications; GCSE English and English Literature. The coursework for these currently includes: Prose study, Shakespeare, Original Writing, Media and Modern Drama.
GCSE English Exam
There are two papers for GCSE English: Paper 1 and Paper 2. For Literature Students sit one paper that covers the novel and poetry.
Entry Level English
A small group of students study the Entry Level English course This is split into modules which gives them practical writing skills. They study a variety of different topics…
AS and A2 courses
AS and A2 courses are offered in English Literature and Media Studies. Students are required to take a more philosophical and mature approach to written material and should be prepared to read extensively in order to achieve the highest grades.
GCSE Media Studies
In year 9 pupils have the ability to choose options for GCSE. Media Studies is an option within the English department that covers theoretical and practical approaches to the media we work with everyday. Pupils learn how to analyse radio broadcasts, television, newspapers, film and magazines.
Debating Club
Students have been involved in Public Speaking competitions. Our year 13s enjoyed success coming third in a balloon debate where they took on the role of Queen Elizabeth the First. St. Edmund Campion will be hosting the competition in March. Other groups meet at different times of the year. Information is disseminated through the department about booster sessions, reading groups and clubs to help students have fun while developing their English skills.
We will be starting a key Stage 3 debating club. Anyone interested should see Mrs. Godwin.
