PRIMARY SCHOOL LIAISON
BUILDING BRIDGES 2009
This year we have extended the building bridges liaison project to four schools:-
Cofton Primary,West Heath Primary,Albert Bradbeer Primary,Turves Green Primary
The project involves pupils working in teams of 5, designing and building bridges that would satisfy a particular set of specifications, all using identical quantities of materials and equipment.
This programme of study takes place over one entire school day. Pupils are escorted or transported to Turves Green Boys' Technology and Humanities College by their class teacher.
The pupils cover a range of activities which sees them working on their own or as a part of a team on a range of designing and making activities. They study the theory of structures, in particular bridges.
They will study a range of different bridges, and use computer software to learn that structures can fail when over loaded, and how to reinforce and strengthen these structures.
PUPIL EXPECTATIONS
By the end of the day, all children will:-
· have investigated bridge structures.
· have completed an A4 design portfolio.
· have completed a wooden bridge as a team effort (5 children).
· have made a performance rating for each bridge will be determined by taking the load at failure and dividing it by the mass of the bridge.
· have a knowledge and understanding that by mixing materials and components such as wood and cardboard triangles structures can be strengthened.
· have completed simple mathematical calculations involving triangles.
· have completed a number of literacy exercises including identifying and defining a series of technical terms.
· have an understanding of the correct tools and techniques for project realisation.
· have an understanding of safe working procedures.
